So one day my wife saw Mutable as an Instagram ad - I looked into it and the concept was pretty good, so we ordered the Essential set together with some extra items. As you probably know from the rating we are extremely satisfied with it, so although I do not do it often I decided to sit down and write a detailed breakdown of each piece and what we liked about it:
1. Mutable table - after our daughter was 18 months we were thinking about getting her the table to mimic the one she has in childcare. I noticed early in the morning when I dropped her she immediately ran to it and started playing. Our existing table was a 'design one' (nothing fancy) and was literally a major child hazard - it had sharp corners and the top was made of glass. I do not understand how it managed to survive the whole year with her around (and also didn't manage to hurt her in any major way).
The problem with getting the table was two-fold: first of all, there are surprisingly few tables and chair for babies. Secondly, the table was rather small - I figured that childcare had a few of them stacked together so they seemed much bigger than they really are.
Mutable is of perfect dimensions - it allows our daughter to play while keeping a few extra items on the table. The quality of the product is very good and the assembly is rather fast and easy - no way to make a mistake (unlike some other children items you will buy and try to assemble). Regarding the size our daughter is 22-months old now and average height, she has no problem to reach the table and sit on the chair on her own.
One thing to note regarding the table - the little ones can get rather curious. Our daughter removed the hole in the middle to look at the puzzles being stored and by pushing herself up managed to lift the table from the opposite side. Nothing major and I do not know if it is actually possible for children to trip over the table, but just something to keep in mind if your child is very active.
Chair - as the table it is made our of very good quality materials. On the lowest height setting she has no problem getting herself seated and even to climb on it. If you would like to you can transition the chair into a stool by removing the back support - Mutable ships two nice stickers that can be used to cover the hole after the back rest.
Now I will briefly discuss the different discs supplied. Do note that they come in mostly two dimensions - thick ones (Puzzle Disc, Lego/Duplo) and thin ones (Whiteboard/Blackboard and two scene discs).
Four Seasons Puzzle / Puzzle disc - this is an incredible puzzle made on a very good quality cardboard. I do not know if it was intentional but at the back the name of the puzzle is written - nice if you have a few of them as it can prevent them getting mixed up.
Lego / Duplo disc - this disc is made out of plastic with two sides, one being for Duplo, the other for Lego. It acts as a main plate for the blocks, similar to what Lego sells separately.
Whiteboard / Blackboard - I didn't have the chance to try the blackboard, but we let our daughter have a go with the whiteboard using the colour pencils we have. Works exactly as you would expect and is easy to clean. If you aren't sure if the pencils are erasable just do what I did and make a tiny dot on the edge, wait a few minutes and try to remove it with a piece of paper of damp sponge.
Scenes Discs (Animals, City) - we didn't have a chance to spend a lot of time with the two of these. Our daughter doesn't seem to be very interested as of yet, but I am sure it will be of great use in a few months.
We immediately ordered a silicone cover - it makes the table much more versatile, and a child can do all the activities without you having to worry about damaging the table e.g. painting with water paints
Hope you enjoyed reading the review - Mutable is really a great purchase for your child that will be with him/her for years to come. I 100% recommend it.
